Sidney Poitier was quiet but powerful. The talented star was remarkable in his early film,"The Blackboard Jungle" (1955). However his 1958 film, "The Defiant One's," landed him an Oscar nomination and put him in the limelight of Hollywood's leading man fanfare. He united the terms "black" and "hero", and he did so with such class and talent that there was no way of denying his ability. In 1963 he won an Oscar for Best Actor, in "Lilies of the Field." In 1967, he starred in three more great hits "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?," "To Sir With Love," and "In The Heat Of The Night"." People magazine compared his charm to the smoothness of ice cream and called his dignity ramrod. Whatever way you describe Poitier, he forever changed the way America looked at the African American man. (CD) Poitier's Home
