SYNOPSIS... A scientist works on a device that "teleports" objects from one place to another. Although it works well with inanimate objects, he has problems teleporting living flesh. The scientist teleports himself. Since there's a fly in the chamber with him, which he doesn't know about, he has a fly's head when he comes out the other side. The scientist hides out, refusing to let his girlfriend see him. After he begs her, she kills him, to put him out of his misery. |
| Review: Director Kurt Neumann's, THE FLY, is a classic Sci-Fi yarn. "Al" Hedison, who came to fame as David Hedison in the TV series, "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", plays Andre, a scientist experimenting with teleporting objects from one place to another. Hedison is believable as Andre, the dedicated scientist. More low key than Jeff Goldblum's over the top performance in the remake, Hedison brings a quiet authority to the role. Patricia Owens, as Andre's girlfriend Helene, brings conviction to her character. She's a notch or two above your average 50's heroine. You feel sympathy for this woman caught in a doomed romance. Vincent Price ("Edward Scissorhands") is entertaining as Francois, a friend of Hedison. Price always seems to be enjoying himself in films like this, and his enthusiasm is contagious. For some reason, many of the characters in his film have French names. Fortunately, the film is in English so you don't have to read subtitles. The films visuals, by Director of Photography, Karl Struss, make good use of light, color, and shadow, particularly in Hedison's lab. The Music, by Paul Sawtell, effectively underscores the films building tension and sense of dread. THE FLY should be fairly watchable for most Sci-Fi fans. Fans of the remake, who have never seen the original, will enjoy it too. |
