Martin Balsam (1919 - 96 ) Martin Balsam was born in the Bronx of New York in 1914. After serving in World War II, he was selected to attend the prestigious Actor's Studio in 1947. Appeared in many broadway shows and won a Tony for his role in the 1967 Broadway production of "You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running". Martin Balsam made his film debut playing Father Barry in On The Waterfront ( 1954), a part that he could probably credit to getting because of his involvement with the Actor's Studio, since it was directed by Elia Kazan and starred Marlon Brando. Although known for his excellent preformances in character roles, unlike most character actors, Martin Balsam wasn't type cast. His career highlights show him playing the everyman as the juror forman in 12 Angry Men (1957), the cynical and doomed private investigator, Milton Arbogast, in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho ( 1960), Admiral Husband E. Kimmel in the World War II drama Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), and Jason Robard's sympathetic brother, in the role that won him an Oscar, in A Thousand Clowns (1965). Martin Balsam was married three times and the father of three children, one of them being actress Talia Balsam, who was married to actor George Clooney in the early nineties.
